Update
The press conference will be delayed until court proceedings are over. Due to the city’s system being down, arrests were not processed until this morning. People have assembled in front of the Atlanta municipal court house and are awaiting news.
Rally Against Endless War
While people at home suffer and our infrastructure crumbles, we spend trillions on wars with vague objectives and no exit strategy. While arguments about the deficit rage and our economy slides towards the abyss, our defense budget is nearly six times that of any other country in the world and twice as much as the next ten countries combined. (globalissues.org)
Why? Who profits? Not the soldiers, who put their lives on the line and whose healthcare, benefits and families go neglected. Not the rest of us, whose priorities and desperate needs get ignored.
“…we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. “ — Dwight D. Eisenhower
We live in the world that President Eisenhower warned us about. And it’s time to take it back.
Rally meets at Troy Davis Park, today at 5 pm. In conjunction with Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition.
We will not stop. We will not be silenced. We are the 99%
Mayor ignores clergy to raid Occupy Atlanta
Today (10/26) Occupy Atlanta will hold a press conference at 11am on the sidewalk of City Hall. After a meeting between Occupy Atlanta and a group of clergy was arranged for Thursday at noon at the mayor’s request, the Atlanta Police Department went ahead with what was apparently a planned raid on Occupy Atlanta Tuesday night. Arrests were made with no resistance, and included Joe Beasley, Derrick Boazman, and State Sen. Vincent Fort. All of those arrested will go before a judge at 8 am. There will be a march to the jail from the park starting at 7:20am. From the jail we will assemble at the Atlanta Municipal Court. Occupy Atlanta will continue to peacefully protest with an anti-war march today at 5 pm.
Statement:
The evidence shows that despite the fact that Mayor Reed claimed that he was sending clergy to speak with Occupy Atlanta in order to find a “peaceful solution,” the outcome was already predetermined. Representatives from the group of clergy arrived at the park and requested a meeting for 5 pm. That time was not available because of a planned march which was posted in the schedule on Occupy Atlanta’s website. Participants in Occupy Atlanta and the representatives of the group of clergy agreed on a meeting time of Thursday at noon at Big Bethel AME Church. However, Atlanta police did not wait for this meeting to take place.
We reiterate that the mayor has misrepresented our peaceful protest. There was no violence on Saturday. The Atlanta Hip Hop Day festival promoters had a permit which was pulled by the city at the last minute. The mayor has misrepresented both Occupy Atlanta and the facts at every possible turn. Nor did he appear to have the full confidence of the clergy sent to negotiate with Occupy Atlanta; Rev. Darrell D. Elligan commented “We heard the mayor, but just because we heard the mayor doesn’t mean we believe the mayor.”

Video: Meeting with clergy being arranged for Thursday
The police were coming tonight no matter what.
Here is evidence that we did not “refuse” to meet with clergy as the AJC and other media outlets reported. We agreed to meet at a time when participants could attend, and with enough lead time to discuss it with the group.
Police Raiding Occupy Atlanta Now (1 am)
Ignoring the meeting arranged for Thursday between Occupy Atlanta and local clergy intended to find a peaceful resolution, Atlanta police are going ahead with what was apparently a pre-planned raid.
