This Saturday Occupy Atlanta along with a broad coalition of unions and community groups including American Friends Service Committee, Georgians For Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Sierra Club, United Food and Commercial Workers, Coalition for the Peoples Agenda, Working Women 9 to 5, Southern Center for Human Rights, Institute for Community Development, International Action Center, Teamsters, Atlanta Jobs with Justice, Atlanta Indy Media Center, Task Force for the Homeless, Project South, Organization of Dekalb Educators, Industrial Workers of the World, Democratic Socialists of America, Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment, Oakhurst Baptist Church, Georgia Peace & Justice Coalition, Georgia WAND, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, Amnesty International Atlanta Chapter, and others will be rallying at the Georgia State Capitol Building to protest proposed laws targeting women, immigrants, the poor, the unemployed, working people, and our right to peacefully protest itself. We will not stop there. Our rally on Saturday will be followed by a speak-out and lobby day in the Capitol Rotunda on Monday, and a series of other events determined by the course of the bills in the legislature. WE ARE GEORGIA!
We are also America. Similar legislation fostered by ALEC and other corporate interests has appeared nation-wide in a widespread assault on civil liberties and human rights. This is corporate rule in action.
We are also citizens of the world. We know that the forces we oppose are global, and that money talks louder than the people’s voice in all corners of the planet. We also know that because of the position of the United States in world politics and the global economy, what happens here affects others disproportionately.
We ask for the support of ALL local Occupy movements across the United States and beyond. SB 469 is a direct attack on Occupy Atlanta and our work with local unions; if it succeeds, similar legislation will be coming your way soon and you will have to fight it on your own home ground. But if we stop it in Georgia, we can stop it everywhere.
Please spread the word. If you can come to Atlanta, come. If you can’t, rally at home, talk to your local communities, talk to the press, make sure everyone understands that this is a national strategy and a national fight. SOLIDARITY!
March 17, 11 am, Georgia State Capitol Building. END CORPORATE RULE! THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!
