The People vs. Sheriff Thomas Brown

Occupy Atlanta and community allies organized a rally outside of Sheriff Thomas Brown’s office at 4415 Memorial Drive today. Over 100 people showed up with signs and carrying some of the wreckage that Sheriff Brown and his officers left in Chris Frazer’s lawn less than a week ago. The furniture was placed in front of the entrance to the Sheriff’s department with the idea of bringing the housing crisis right to their doorstep. The Sheriff’s office locked the door and refused to respond to community concerns. Chris Frazer, Carmen Pittman, and Pastor Dexter Johnson all spoke to the crowd outside demanding that Sheriff Brown apologize and let Chris Frazer back in her home. After the demonstration, Dekalb deputies pulled over one of the lead organizers for no reason, threatened anyone who attempted to film the scene, impounded the vehicle, and cuffed an activist that refused to stop recording the officers as they obstructed the law. Later that activist was taken to Grady hospital for injuries and released from custody.

Chris’ house was foreclosed on fraudulently by Investors One Corporation in October 2011, and she currently has a case in federal court disputing the foreclosure. In March, activists with Occupy Atlanta set up camp on her lawn and committed to stay to defend Chris’ home from eviction. That all changed last week when 50 officers stormed her house at 3 AM, and put Chris, her 85 year old mother, and 3 year old grandson out on the street, ignoring the federal court order that was supposed to protect her. No matter how Sheriff Thomas Brown tries to spin it, the actions taken by him and his deputies was just plain wrong. Dekalb County deserves better.

Please call Sheriff Thomas Brown’s office and demand that he let Chris Frazer return to her home.

Following the eviction, expenses are adding up, as Chris and her family try to find a place to live, and store their belongings in the meantime. Please donate in anyway you can.

Occupy & Vine City Residents Take On Bank of America to Fight Foreclosure!

The foreclosure crisis hit Vine City hard. Now, only 15% of residents own their
homes and many of them are facing hardship, like resident Pamela Flores whose
property backs up to Martin Luther King III and City Councilman Michael Julian
Bond’s home.

Pamela bought her home at an inflated amount in 2006, the
height of the crime spree at the hands of American banking institutions. In 2009
she attempted to get a loan modification with Bank of America through the
“Making Homes Affordable” program. The bank told her that in order to qualify
she needed to miss 3-4 mortgage payments; this is a scam that has already put
countless Americans out of their homes. During the time she missed payments, at
the banks request and in order to meet the loan modification criteria, she fell
into foreclosure. By qualifying for the “Making Homes Affordable” program
foreclosure was temporarily avoided. Pamela began to pay trial period monthly
payments for the “Making Homes Affordable” program. When it was time for Bank of
America to grant her the promised modification, they instead mailed her a
notification alleging that she failed to make four out of five payments. Her
home, unknowing to her, was slated for auction at the Fulton County courthouse
during the time the bank claimed to be researching their records for the
“missing” payments. The thing is, Pamela Flores never missed a payment, in fact
she was never even late, and has all the records to prove it.
Pamela was forced to file for Chapter 13 and 7 bankruptcy  in order to stop Bank of America from stealing her home. The act of filing has stopped Pamela from being able to recieve a student loan she had formally been approved for in her effort to pursue a
masters degree at Emory University. Her ordeal with Bank of America has forever
impacted the course of her life. The home she paid over $180k for is now
appraised at $38k.

Since she reached out to Occupy Atlanta a few weeks ago, we were able to
work with the Rainbow Push Coalition to put off her home auction for one
month–but that’s not good enough. Occupy Atlanta has begun a full scale occupation of Pamela’s home until Bank of America makes a deal to keep her in it. Occupy Atlanta
will work with her community to establish a base for defending other homes
at risk of foreclosure and eviction. We plan to target private and public
institutions that continue to disrespect Vine City residents.

Occupy Our Homes Atlanta is committed to maintaining a 24/7 presence at the home of Pamela Flores until Bank of America makes a deal that keeps her in home. During our
time here we also plan to work with the Vine City community to create a hub, at
Pamela’s home, for eviction/foreclosure defense. We invite folks from
surrounding communities who are struggling with housing issues to come down to
245 Griffin Street, Atlanta and work with us to build the communties we can
survive and thrive in.

WE ARE GEORGIA! March @ The Georgia State Capitol, 3/17

Alert To All Georgians & States Nationwide!

Georgia state legislators are getting ready this week to attempt to criminalize our constitutional right to protest via the passage of Senate Bill 469.

If approved by the Georgia House and signed by the Governor, SB 469 would criminalize peaceful acts of protest, including public picketing related to labor disputes outside of any privately owned buildings. Individuals or union members or any individual employees who participate in such protests could be fined up to $1,000 a day, and organizations, which support such actions, could face penalties of up to $10,000 a day. Moreover, the bill adds a category of “conspiracy to commit criminal trespass,” which would make it a high and aggravated misdemeanor to plan acts of peaceful civil protest. The bill also includes provisions that weaken the power of workers to organize unions and bargain collectively with their employers by restricting the ability of workers to negotiate contracts with employers that provide for union dues and agency fees, therefore effectively de-funding Georgia’s unions and further penalizing their right to political and economic protest.

Occupy Atlanta, Georgia unions, and a broad coalition of other concerned Georgians will amass this coming Saturday March 17th at 11am at the Georgia State Capitol to take a stand against this villainous attack to our constitutional rights. We will bring our voices, our signs, our beliefs, and our democratic bodies and will peacefully assemble to STOP SB 469. We urge workers, people of faith, social justice advocates, people of all political backgrounds, and you to join us in protest and solidarity and call for this bill to be immediately rejected. This law is a corporate attempt to legalize the political and economic strangulation of the 99% and we cannot afford to ignore this unconstitutional attack.

SB 469 shares characteristics of model legislation crafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (A.L.E.C.) an out-of-state, secretive, corporate-funded council of which member corporations actually help draft laws that are then presented to their lawmaker allies. The lead sponsor of the bill is Georgia state Senator Donald Balfour, a Waffle House vice-president who believes that working people who stand up for their rights are criminals who ought to be in prison. The timing of SB 469 also suspiciously coincides with the lay-off coalition protests that are on-going at AT&T Atlanta headquarters on West Peachtree Rd.

We all know that for years corporate money has been used to drown our votes and warp our democratic institutions. But now the powerful seek to suppress our presence in the streets. We are witnessing in real time how corporations seek to directly rule our society with the support of their fraternal lawmakers, a militarized police force, and the privatized prison industry complex that makes a profit with every new arrest. Allowing the political-corporate axis to get away with this will pave the way for additional repressive legislation to the point where corporations and their political stooges will “legally” squeeze away our rights to protest anything, anywhere, anytime. The criminalization of otherwise protected activities represents an assault on the nation’s ideals and our fundamental human and democratic rights. As Atlanta native, Martin Luther King, Jr. said on the night before he was killed, “The greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”

What kind of country do you want to live in? Does this fit your definition of the United States? How will this law affect the future of your children? Does it matter what political party or views you espouse? Should your right to protest be criminalized?

Fight back against the scandalous actions of this legislative session, which have also included legislated attacks on women, minorities, immigrants, the environment, the poor, and all Georgia taxpayers.

Stand up for your rights, or prepare to lose them.

Occupied Solidarity Stand – Monday Oct17th 4pm – JOIN US!

A day after the dedication ceremony for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC, Mayor Kasim Reed effectively gave an eviction notice to the Occupy Atlanta Protesters at Troy Davis Park.

Mayor Reed hinted towards backing off his recent “eviction notice.” However, the mere implication that Occupy Atlanta Protesters would need to vacate public property for practicing civil disobedience over our crumbling economy did not fall on deaf ears. The Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council voted unanimously to mobilize on Monday October 17th, 2011, in support of continuing Occupation. Together, Occupy Atlanta and the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council will host an “Occupied Solidarity Stand.”

Our Occupation is an act of civil disobedience. It is very much in line with the history of principled protest which includes Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is such a rich part of Atlanta’s history. We deeply appreciate the solidarity and support of the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council and call on everyone who believes in the right of the people to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Please join your voice to ours.

Alive and Well!

On Monday October 10, Occupy Atlanta retained its encampment in Woodruff Park (aka Troy Davis Park) as the focal point of peaceful protests for regaining the integrity of our economic and political system.  Atlanta Police entered into dialog with Occupy participants earlier in the day and assured people that there would be no surprise attacks or aggression if the police were given the order to enforce ordinances to remove the camp.  On Monday evening Atlanta Police established a significant presence surrounding the park, and it appeared that they were prepared to act.  Later it became evident that they would instead respect the occupation, and demobilized.  Occupy Atlanta anticipates more contact with the office of Mayor Kasim Reed and seeks to work cooperatively with our city in the spirit of Martin Luther King and our other native champions of civil rights.

Occupy Atlanta is a part of the nationwide Occupy movement started by Occupy Wall Street. We are in protest of the excessive power that corporations have in our country. Corporate money in politics has defiled the very fabric of America:  Democracy.  Our nation’s economy, education and environment has been forfeited to sustain the 1%’s greed. We say no more.  We are the 99%.
