DGV 11/22/11 Meeting Minutes

11/22/11 Meeting Minutes
1st Item
We had a very productive meeting this evening. We have agreed upon an outline for accomplishing the formation of demands. We realize that as a demands committee we are in the process of writing out an ever changing and developing manifesto for the movement. By organizing sections, chapters, or an outline of this ”manifesto” we will best be able to produce documents to aid the work of the Action and Outreach committee. The first step to writing a good document is writing an outline. This outline will also be a guide to sorting suggestions made to the demands committee.

Attached is the DGV Committee’s map

1. Statement of Purpose is the Next Item on the Agenda
a. We have agreed to Start Collaborating the following two statements into one on the google groups to be voted by the next meeting.
i. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all people are created equal,
and
endowed with certain unalienable rights. As such, the ninety-nine percent
deserve
the same rights and
protections as the one percent who benefit unfairly from the
current system. As the
system has become destructive of these unalienable rights,
so it is the right of the
people to create a system that better serves the needs of
the ninety-nine percent.
ii. Remove Corporate influence from politics and government. Our Government needs to reflect the will of the people not just the wealthy.
2. Guiding Principle will state who we are and the manner in which we operate. This will build off of the OA GA’s Pledge.
3. Declarations of Grievances will call out the injustices this movement seeks to abolish. It will be similar to the OWS Declaration. There is talk of “Standing in Solidarity” with OWS Declaration and adding a section to list off state grievances. E.g. “And here in Atlanta Georgia they have brutally murdered innocent men with their monopoly on force” or “Here in Georgia they have ruined public education” etc.
a. Link To OWS Declaration inspiring our Declaration of Grievances: http://occupywallst.org/forum/first-official-release-from-occupy-wall-street/
4. Local Atlanta and Georgia Based Demands
a. We will “roll out” general demands for our local community as they are agreed upon by the GA.
b. We will call on local Activist and Community organizations who are well versed on each demand to help us organize educational workshops and actions on each specific demand.
c. This will build alliances and broaden the base of our think tank.
5. Other movement such as occupy DC and Boston have put considerable work into the formation of National and Congressional Demands. We will analyze and evaluate other movements work on these national demands and put ideas before the GA as to which ones w, OA, will stand in Solidarity with.
a. We will organize actions and events based around said national demands in the same format as our congressional demands.

Although this chapter is numerically organized we are not bound to following this exact order outlined. We are starting with the Statement of purpose because it is what the GA asked for. Other Chapters can be continually worked on. This chart or map is here to help us organize our ideas and the constant flow of incoming suggestions. This chart can always grow to accommodate other categories of documents regarding the Movement.

2nd Item- Internal Organization
We will be using the google groups as our primary form of internal communication.
We will post minutes and items agreed upon by consensus to the DGV section of occupyatlanta.org
We are still in the process of setting regular meeting times, however this is difficult during the holiday week.
We are in search of a public space to sit down at a table that is relatively free of distractions so that we can increase the productivity of our meetings. Please post suggestions for places near the park. Can someone look up the library’s hours?
Once the number of the members on the website outnumber the google group we will make a formal switch to operating solely on the website.
