Website Meeting Minutes 12-10-11

Location: Peachtree and Pine, 4th floor
Official Meeting Time: 8pm

AttendanceAndrew V, Shana, Matt, Jimmy, Donald,  Billy attended the work session only

Minute taker: Shana

Since everyone is now working on their own tasks we went around the group and talked about what we’re working on and discussed the details of those projects.

All projects are currently being listed on GitHub: http://goo.gl/Kd2AU
There is also a wiki there for how to’s for new people and a change log for the records.

-

Billy - Will take a look at googles new image file for lowering the file size of some images on our site.

Discussion:  Shana and Billy both will look at this more and try to implement.

Donald - Made edits to Website How To’s and will be making these changes on the site.  Provided a list of suggestions for better User Experience on a few pages.  Will add these to the GitHub issues list and begin work on making the changes on the test server.

• Center the submit button on the page, and make it larger with a larger emboldened label, “Create My Account”.
• Place the following text below the submit button.
Once you click on “Create My Account” an email confirmation will be sent to the address you provided above.
This message will have the subject: “Activate Your Account”.
Click on the link found in this message.
You will be taken to a web page indicating “Account Activated”.
At that point you can use your account by clicking on the red word ‘LOGIN’ near the top right corner of any page on this web site and providing your Username and Password.”
• Change the “Account Details” heading to “Your Private Information” and move “Username” to the profile section.
• Change the “Profile Details” heading to “Your Public Profile Information” and move “Name” (capitalizing it in the process) to the private section.
• In the form, below the words “Username” and “Choose a Password” place -in small grey text- “Remember this!”.
• In the form, below the words “Email Address” place -in small grey text- “You will receive a confirmation email at this address.”.
• Remove the “Login” section from the bottom of the page.

• The user’s name doesn’t appear in the “What’s new, ?” heading, near the top of the page, as the old How To described it.
I’d suggest just changing the heading to “What’s new?”
• In the “What’s new, ?” section: The mechanism for adding an image to a post is inconsistent with adding a video or a link.
Clicking on the still camera produces a button to “Add image URL” which must be click in order to enter an image URL.
The video camera and chain link icons -when clicked- immediately provide a text entry box for providing a URL.

http://occupyatlanta.org/donate/

• Change the “ATL GENERAL ASSEMBLY:” information to reflect the current schedule of GAs.
• Add another section for non-logistics needs (ex. donations of tools, part, & old bikes for the free bike clinic; old laptops for various working group efforts; … .)

http://occupyatlanta.org/events/

• The search parameters at the top of the page are a bit excessive (country, region, state.)
• The switch over to a new day is borked. At 1:13AM the previous day’s events all listed as “TODAY”, …
• Not all events show up. The Web group meeting for 2011Dec10 didn’t display on the events page, but was found using search on the events page.

Discussion:
Shana – “What’s New” did have the users name, so there must be an error there.
Donald – Whatever it is we should change the How To’s to reflect that.
Agreed.

Notes about the Donate Page from Shana:  (we didn’t go over this in the meeting) whatever we implement here concerning the GA needs to update automatically with the General Assembly Event.  It changes frequently and it’s not practical to make these changes manually each time the schedule changes. I will take a look here and see how I might be able to set this up.

Notes about the Events Page from Shana:  (we didn’t go over this in the meeting)  The switch over of TODAY after midnight is an issue we are aware of and it seems to be an issue with the time settings. Jimmy has worked on this and it has improved.  I’ll let Jimmy discuss that with you more and it is also listed as an issue on our GitHub.  Events not showing up was/is a cache issue with only not logged in users, should be fixed now (it should update every 16mins)

Shana - Created a Mobile Theme based off of our current theme that’s being controlled via the w3 Total Cache, need feedback on the formatting and views from different phones. When this is complete the next step here is to create a Mobile Dashboard theme. Already tried the available plugins for this and they don’t work, will have to look into our options on this more.
There is a caching issue preventing changes in Events from displaying to not logged in users. Billy and I made a change to deal with this… we’ll have to see if it worked, if not more changes will need to be made.

Updated cache this week to minify CSS files and will test JS minifying on test site.

-

Andrew - Working on getting a class schedule together. If Donald can help with that it would be great.

Discussion: Shana – it would be good to set a date now, so people can be preparing.
Donald – yes I can help.
Andrew & Donald worked out a date/time  of Friday 12-16 @ 5:30pm
Shana – be sure and let Avery know the date so he can make the projector available. (I’ll add this to the Website Calendar)

Jimmy - Finished up the Global search and it’s live on the site.

Discussion:  Shana – love it! let’s add a link to it on the sidebar as well.
