Legal Committee Meeting Minutes – December 18, 2011

Legal Committee Meeting

Sunday December 18, 2011

Attendees: Lauren, Shayna, Juliana, Natalie

1)      Arrestees

  1. Arrestee Meeting scheduled for Sunday at 4pm
  2. Juliana is working with Madelyn to set up a meeting of the lawyers

2)      Copper

  1. He was arrested last Sunday (12/11) and charged with three felonies
  2. Bond was set at $14,000
  3. Jet bonding will work with us and charge us 8% for the bond, so we need $1265 if we use them. We have the funds to cover this and GA has approved the expenditure, but we still need someone to sign the bond. The person signing needs to be a Georgia resident, be able to provide three friends/family contacts, and provide a recent pay stub demonstrating that they’re employed.
  4. Juliana will put money into Copper’s commissary account so that he can get things he needs in jail.
  5. La’Markus is a minister and tried to visit him on Saturday, but was told can only visit Mon-Fri. He’ll try again on Monday.

3)      Finances

  1. Chelsea has the password for the WePay account. Finance is setting up a bank account for us at the credit union. Once we have that account information we will set up the WePay account to move funds to that bank account.

4)      Narrative from November 5th

  1. Jeff Filipowitz, the lawyer handling the civil lawsuit has asked for a narrative of events for the night of November 5th. Juliana will get the legal observer notes from everyone and share them with the committee. Shayna and Natalie will try to meet and consolidate those notes into a coherent description of events. We will need this for the criminal cases as well.

5)      Website

  1. The Website Committee (Shana) stopped by and talked about improving our use of the website.
  2. Juliana will add Shayna and Natalie as moderators for the website.

6)      Actions on January 9th

  1. NAACP is organizing an ‘execute the death penalty’ action on January 9th. They are willing to share their permit with us.
  2. Some people are planning Occupy actions to coincide with this event.
  3. Juliana will let the lawyers know about the action. Lauren/Juliana will plan on coordinating jail support needs for that and the next day.

7)      Jail support forms

  1. We need to get jail support forms from everyone. We should all be carrying around blank forms and encouraging people to complete them.
  2. The language on the form needs to be updated so that it’s clear that everyone should fill one out, not just those considering arrest.
