Meeting Times: Sunday’s @ 3pm
Home Page: http://media.occupyAtlanta.org
Art and design, street art, street teams, outreach, Social Media, Nuts and bolts logistics of message spreading-admins for blog space, developing slogans and memes. acquisition of materials (poster boards, markers, LiveStream/computer equipment), liaising with local media outlets (AJC, local TV, CNN, CreativeLoafing, etc.)
Meeting minutes 2/12/12
Check-ins
James: I did a training for Livestream, more people want to do it and some are purchasing equipment. We are trying to coordinate with one another.
Sara: I have been trying to avoid being in Media or doing Media work. I have been unsuccessful, in that if I don’t prod people to have meetings or do other things it mostly doesn’t happen. I am unhappy about this state of affairs.
Shayna: I am in Legal, but I tweet from the OA Twitter account. I want to know about the AT&T action and what is going on with that.
Brian: I’m here to provide contact from WRFG. We have been doing interviews with people from Occupy Atlanta on a regular basis. What else could we be doing? I have an idea to do a live announcement; we used to have a “People’s Calendar” feature. I can write press releases and I have some contacts with Atlanta Progressive News, including Gloria Tatum. I know that she and Minnie Ruffin have been bringing meals to the park.
Jose’- I have been working a project which has taken up a lot of my time, and am also on the board for GLAHR which now has a radio station, 1310. I have been working on making connections between GLAHR and Occupy, but currently GLAHR is moving offices and they are tied up with that and getting the radio station going.
Agenda items:
Sara: We passed a proposal to call for the repeal of Georgia laws which suppress worker’s rights. It’s the first “demand” we’ve passed. Do we think that should get a press release? or possibly tie it in with the AT&T action?
Discussion: Both. We should talk to Ben, Roger, and Ernest and see about a joint statement or comments from them.
James: Livestream is pretty much a free-for-all. More people are taking an interest, but are using their own equipment, rather than Media providing it, so it’s less of a Media committee thing and more of a wide-open thing.
Sara: This is not in any way different from how it was before. Media never provided equipment except for one Clearspot; people have always had to use their own.
Jose’: Home Defense is trying to recruit more people, Occupiers and defendees. Tim is doing a presentation at Higher Ground on Thursday at 7 pm. I’m working with a woman named Chris, part of the work we are doing is contacting other people, reaching out to press. What we need from Media is help writing a press release.
James: Do a Livestream, also contact other Occupations. When we went to DC, whenever people heard we were from Occupy Atlanta they immediately identified us as doing foreclosure defense, and many of them were very interested in how we do it. They want us to send people to teach them and if we put out the word we were Livestreaming our Home Defense presentation many of them would tune in. If we can’t get a Livestream, we can at least get video.
Sara: Put out the word to Occupy Athens, also via InterOccupy. But Jose mentioned a press release…who can write it? or help edit it? James…?
James: I can if it can be done via e-mail.
Things to put in place for the presentation: Livestreaming, Spanish interpreting (Jose), Twitter, video.
Social media discussion: The OWS social media plan isn’t happening yet. The Facebook group is much calmer and has a larger and broader group of moderators. So unless it turns into a huge problem again AND we have a better idea, it stays.
Did Outreach ever create an announcement list? If Outreach isn’t doing it, do we have the manpower to take on one more thing? (Probably not, unless it can be made so that it just propagates from the website like the Twitter and Facebook page).
Later discussion: Media needs to have regular meetings again. Also, we should publicize our internal process write-up that we sent to the Process and Facilitation committee, and also come up with some kind of protocol for what we need from people if they want Media to do stuff for them.
